THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX

Every now and then we have to take engineering design and think outside the box or in this case outside the circus ring. Our client’s family home in South London had an interesting history. Originally a light industrial unit, it has been used as a Methodist Chapel, a Nightclub and a rehearsal space for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Such an extraordinary building was not destined to become ordinary.

We were asked to provide advice on rigging for various types of circus equipment – our client’s hobby. In a room with a large pitched roof – providing the necessary height, our consultant assessed the safe loads that the existing steel roof trusses could support. This information was used by the rigging contractor to install the circus equipment. We like to imagine our client engaging in his hobby – safely twirling and somersaulting. Not the usual end result for one of our projects.
